Although it is less popular than other yachts made in Germany, Dehler yachts have always been highly appreciated among yachtsmen. Their latest model, Dehler 38, attracted the attention both of charter companies and competitive sailors.
LOA of Dehler 38 amounts to 11.30 m with 3.75 m of the beam. The draft varies between 1.60 m, 2.00 m and 2.20 m, depending on desired option. The mast is also available in two sizes – 17.82 m and 18.55 m. Depending on the option. Total sail surface also amounts to 79.30 m2 or 86.50 m2, depending on buyer’s choice. Dehler 38 is powered by a 28 HP Volvo Penta, while the fuel tank holds as much as 160 l of diesel. The fresh water tank has a capacity of 315 l.
Thanks to her innovative design signed by Judel/Vrolijk & Co. studio, Dehler 38 is equally appreciated as a functional and practical vessel for charter, or as a slightly optimized model which achieves respectable results on the race course. The interior is originally available in two options – with two or three cabins. The aft space to port in the version with two cabins is designed as a massive storage space – for wet clothes or other equipment. The bathroom is designed as a space with a door which in one position divides the shower and the toilet space while in the other position the same door unites the space with the lavatory, dividing the whole bathroom from the saloon.
The galley is unexpectedly large and equipped with all necessary items, while the dining table has a foldable side which reaches a double sofa to port, transforming the entire saloon into a massive dining room. The chart table is connected to double sofa to port and is attached to the rails which allows it to be put aside. The electric panel is located in the compartment above the chart table while all other storages remind on those in the airplanes.
The storage in the bow is also designed with a great care for functionality. It is done in three layers – the anchor chain is stored in the lowest, the middle one could be used to store ropes while the top layers are where the anchor winch is attached. The deck and superstructure are pretty flat and elegant, leaving enough space for moving and handling lines and sails.
The major difference from other Dehler models is the large and functional cockpit. Pedestals are divided from the rest of the space in the cockpit by twin steering wheels, while lines are placed below the deck, to improve safety and functionality of spacious, but still a cockpit. There are three hatches in the cockpit – one to port leads to wet clothes area, the middle is reserved for a an tomatic pilot engine, while one to starboard leads to the rest of the aft space under the deck. The cockpit table has central position but could be removed for the races. The winches, jammers and other sheet controls are placed in a manner to provide easy handling even for single handed sailing.
The overall impression after sailing Dehler 38 leaves a feeling that it is a fine classical sailing yacht, ready to be compared with any modern, even competition sailing yacht within the class. Promotional competition sailing team of Croatian Dehler dealer already left their mark on race courses this winter and spring. There is no time to wait…
