Recommended period for sailing the Slovenian coast is between April and October. When it comes to weather and climate, Slovenia experiences seasonal variations. The region around the Alps experiences a rugged Alpine climate, the inland has a continental climate, and the coastal region enjoys sub-Mediterranean climate. Average temperatures during summer go around 20-24 °C. The winds are moderate with north-westerly winds dominating on the coast during summer days.
Katabatic winds are to be expected during nights. Springtime weather can be unstable with occasional strong storms. The winds are generally favourable and pleasant for renting a sailboat. Expect a weak mistral during summer. Although bora is not that frequent, be aware of this dry and cold wind coming from the northeast. More frequent during spring and autumn seasons. Scirocco, a strong south-southeast wind, can be experienced during summer. If you notice the calm sea, intermittent winds, and decrease in pressure, you can be sure this wind is coming.
On average, the waves are between 0.5 m and 1.5 m, but can get bigger with stronger winds. Sea currents in the Adriatic are hardly noticeable and move at average speed of 0.5 knots. Tides have small amplitudes, around 40 cm, but can get slightly bigger if jugo is blowing.
